1) How long is the 1" box section that connects the tail to the rear of the generator frame 27" ?
2) What angle are the blades bent to ?
3) Why is the connection between the tail and generator frame off set from the centre line , see the plan view on page 5.
4) Do you know of any second hand motor supplies in Europe.
5) Can the motor take the thrust and radial loads OK ?

Car alternator regulators do a different job,controlling the field coils inside the alternator to keep the output consistent. This makes them unsuitable for wind turbine regulators. |

I don't use a slip ring assembly, in a not very turbulent site, the wire usually corrects itself. I run the cable down the inside of the mount tube and attach a plug and socket at the base, so I can quickly 'un spin' the wire if required.
I am not sure about using a regulator from a car alternator, a battery is the best thing to absorb higher DC voltages (until it is fully charged), and then the power should be diverted to a maybe a large bulb or other resistive load. |

Will give the search a try, and see what turns up.
Is there a need for a slip ring assembly to give full freedom of movement or does the cable normally sort its self out during the course of a day?
I am also thinking about using a regulator from a car alternator but was thinking about connecting the wind mill motor output after the rectifier.
Do you think this will work and provide a cheap regulator?
I will be back with more questions, Thanks for the time so far

Hi Graeme, and welcome to the forum.

28" - longer if you have a smaller tail - generally what looks right
2) What angle are the blades bent to ?
45 degrees - I have a better, more simple propeller design available now.

Too keep the tail on the centre line - otherwise it would be 1/2" out of line - not really that important.
4) Do you know of any second hand motor supplies in Europe.
Sorry no,I have bought a couple from Germany recently off eBay, it's important when searching to add the E.U in your search under 'advanced search'
Also keep searching for 'DC motor'.

Yes, in my experience. The Ametek 30 motor has solid bearings - the propeller needs to be well balanced to avoid any problems. |
