Hi all,

As some of you may have read in the “Solar panel” thread I am currently in the planning phase of moving to France (Pyrenees) to be self sufficient.

As such I fully intend to be off-grid and generate all power via solar and wind (and water if I’m lucky) sources.

The solar aspects are being addressed in the above mentioned thread, but I am starting to consider my wind generator requirements.

From all my work to date on wind turbines I am happy to just buy an off the shelf generator and build a complete turbine around it (based on a 12V system). The question is which one to go for.

The options are:

1) The modified car alternator that’s used in the Hornet type turbines.

http://www.hydrogenappliances.com/splitcorePMAs.html

The slant core design has the PM magnets mounted on a slant so eliminates the cogging effect. You’ll need to click on the individual options to see the rpm/voltage/amperage charts.

2) The modified car alternator that’s used in the Beewind turbines.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WIND-GENERATOR-TURBINE-PERMANENT-MAGNET-ALTERNATOR_W0QQitemZ200152470918QQihZ010QQcategoryZ294QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I’ve emailed Beewind to ask for a the volt / amp output related to rpm but heard nothing back.

3) The Renewable Components PM generator (1100W version)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Permanent-Magnet-Generator-1100W-Wind-Turbine-Hydro-Bio_W0QQitemZ250166928814QQihZ015QQcategoryZ41981QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

These appear to be marketed towards 24V plus systems and I will probably opt for a simple 12V system. I’ve also asked for some data on volts / amps and rpm but nothing heard to date.

4) The modified car alternator from Windblue Power

http://cgi.ebay.com/Wind-Turbine-Generator-PMA-Permanent-Magnet-Alternator_W0QQitemZ170151160449QQihZ007QQcategoryZ121837QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I really quite like the look of this one. 12V at 150rpm. Only about 12A max but it will give about 7A at 300rpm and 10A at 625rpm. I know this isn’t massive power but I was thinking that it’s better to make reasonable power most of the day than just big amps occasionally. I’ll be in the Pyrenees so wind should not be a particular problem.

5) And lastly, the Futurenergy PM generator.

(scroll down the page to view the PM generators)

The only other thing to mention is Ghurd’s advice of:

“A few minutes of 8MPH gusts are better than all day with a 4MPH breeze”.
I think that being in the Pyrenees I should get a decent steady supply of wind but I would rather it trickle in at 5 to 10 amps most of the day than 30 amps occasionally.

So what’s everyone’s advice and thoughts?

Thanks

Message for Chris psmith, BS85 and Donniedingle:

I've just spoken with Futurenergy and agreed that we'll each place our orders separately on Friday this week and pay via our respective payment cards. Once they have all five orders they will process them. Cost is £105 plus VAT so £123.38 plus carriage of £18.50 (Chris i know you're collecting so just the £123.38 for you) so £141.88 in total.

If they receive all orders by 2pm they will process and dispatch them on the same day so we will receive our units on Monday 21st. I'll be placing my order nice and early and checking with Futurenergy that they have received everyone's order. I have everyone's tele number so can chase anyone that holds up the process.

Please order direct with Sandra on 01789 - 450005. Don't press any 'option' buttons when prompted just wait and ask for Sandra.

I think that's it. Any queries please let me know.

Cheers

Two days to go now chaps.

Just thought I give a last call for anyone else that might be interested.

Details are:

A Futurenergy wind turbine generator. See www.futurenergy.co.uk Your choice of model (12v, 24v, 36v and 48v) ranging from 650W to 1500W ouputs. £140 (give or take a few pence) delivered (or you could collect and save yourself about £18).

We place our orders on Friday the 18th so anyone else that is interested needs to let me know either today or tomorrow.

Thanks all.

Are we all on for the 18th???
chris_psmith Posted - 23/12/2007 : 10:46:27
Del, Visa is dandy for me.
Del Posted - 22/12/2007 : 11:29:36
Don't know I'm afraid. I'm sure they'll take credit card or debit card but Paypal is a bit more ebay so maybe not.

If anyone has a preference to pay by Paypal let me know and I'll find out.

Cheers

Del, any idea what payment they take - visa / paypal etc, had a look on the site but it wasn't listed?

Hi all,

The outline arrangement between myself and Futurenergy was that we would all place our orders independantly but on the same day. I would liase with Futurenergy as to the status of the collective ordersand and once they confirmed to me that they had indeed received all the orders to achieve the discount they would then process those orders at the agreed price. If there was any problems, for example if someone didn't follow up their verbal commitment with an order, I would be the one to chase them.

The 18th is fine with me. What about everyone else?

Cheers
