Hi guys... Hope you have enjouyed your Turkey .... and christmas pudding!

Can anyone give me an advice regarding Power inverters?, dose it depends on the voltage of batteries, or the model of an Ametek?.

And I guess the model of an inverter also depends of how many electric device you use in a house?

Please look at this link

the brand was 'PSi' - got it from B&Q a while ago , its only a small switch so not too sure .. I dont need to use it much as most of my stuff will run off 12v.

"My 120w inverter still takes 3w even when turned off but plugged in" - that's interesting - then what's the purpose of having a switch? Just to turn off the power at the output sockets?

I just checked my TrippLite 175W and there is no power drain when connected and turned off.

Fungus, did you buy that inverter new? what brand is it? Obviously, in your case, you should disconnect it.

'The inverter should be turned off while there are no loads.' My 120w inverter still takes 3w even when turned off but plugged in, the same as when the output is on; unplug it totally to make sure there isnt any phantom load.

The inverter's voltage should be the same with the battery bank voltage and the inverter's wattage shlould be higher than the sum of your loads wattages.

I am not sure about how much higher the inverter's wattage should be compared with the sum of the load's wattages.

I saw once a brand new 75W inverter that couldn't turn on one 26W CFL bulb.

About brands, I'm not really sure. I had a Nexxtech 175W or 150W failing after using it for few times, also a Xantrex 175W failed at first usage while charging my cell in the car (the fan started to make noise after 20 minutes).

I switched to TrippLite as a friend recommended and I just got a used 175W TrippLite inverter from eBay for $12 including shipping.

Also, the inverter is draining the battery while it is on, even if all loads are turned off. The lower the inverters wattage, the lower the draining from the battery. The inverter should be turned off while there are no loads.

good evening, i think as long as its 12v then its jst the 'watts' you've got to look at, so say you've got 4 x 11watt energy saving bulbs to run the you need an inverter thats greater than say 75 watt, you've got to allow something for the efficiancy of the inverter - i think most inverters are about 80% efficiant,

if you was to buy a 2000watt inverter then i think this would be more than enough to run even complex things, just a matter of how long it will run it for

please all correct me if im wrong!! we're all here to learn from each other

we can all make wind!!
