i got two of these blocking diodes

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=280186854111&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=018

just wondering, if you have this type, how did you connect it up (i mean what method)? do these get hot? whats the maximum distance away from the battery it can be placed?

i am hopeing to put all my electric components in an electric box, with just the wires from the controller etc going to a set of crocodile clips so it all looks neat, but i need to know how hot this diode gets and the heatsink on fungus's controller?

Yes, the whole thing is 'live'.
I would not put it in the same box, just because of shorts.
Also, it will take a lot more space than it looks like, hard to squeeze everything in without a potential problem.

so would i be able to mount the diode inside my controllerbox without it shorting out on anything or is it best to keep this diode away from the rest of my box? would i be mistaken in thinking that the whole body of this diode is 'live'?

hi ags
i got one of these on my genny
your wind gen has two wires coming from it an pos and a live. check these with your multimeter as sometimes the red is the pos and the black live it should put a little minus sign on the multimeter if they are opposite way round
the diode connects to your battery (big fat end with the bolt on) then your live wire from your wind gen gos to the little thin end with the loop thats about it
power can enter your battery but nothing can come back thru the diode. i also added a inline fuse like the ones in your local car parts shop just before the live wire connected to the little loop bit
i often check mine just with my hand but have never felt it hot. once my genny was kicking out about 6.5 amps and it still never felt warm

With my controller it should only get to about 50C absolute max, so not too hot to be in a box. With that diode it has a voltage drop of 0.3v, so with an ametek of a max of 10A it'll only be dissipating a few watts, a reasonable size heatsink maybe 3" square should be enough. It doesnt matter how far away from the battery it is.
