Hello Gotwind members!

I have been checking out different charge controllers for some time and have a couple of questions that i have for all of you. I have read that you cant use a solar charge controller for a wind application, however when i look for charge controllers for a wind turbine i have not had much success.

http://cgi.ebay.com/20A-SOLAR-PANEL-WIND-POWER-CHARGE-REGULATOR-CONTROLLER_W0QQitemZ230240601228QQihZ013QQcategoryZ78859QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I found this on ebay and it says that i can be used for a wind turbine but before i considered it i wanted to know what you all thought. I know for a wind turbine application you have to have a dump load and i see on this controller it has a place to hook up loads to, but is that considered a dump load? I have also read that the Xantrex c35 is a good controllers but i was hoping to find something a little cheaper. From what i have seen from SuperWindy's Videos it looks like you have the same controller as the one i have in the site, im just curious how that is working for you.

Thanks

Here is ghurd's web site: http://ghurd.info

At the bottom of the page, click on "CONTACT" to get in touch with him.

Also, fungus used to get his kits, assemble them and sell them. Check this thread, there is a link to his web site: http://gotwind.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~466~SearchTerms~kit.asp

Thanks for the response. I had a feeling that thats what the load spot was for but i wanted to check first
before making a mistake and being out all that money.

Now you say you bought Ghurds kit, where do you do that at, i would be interested in purchasing or atleast
taking a look at the kit and see if its something i might be able to do myself.

Thanks,
Novice

Windnovice,

If a controller is designed ONLY for solar charging, it won't work with wind turbines. It will get fried.

A controller designed to work with wind turbines must have a dump load feature, as you mentioned, and the one in your link does not have such a feature. This controller is not suitable for wind turbines, even if the title sais otherwise. The place to hook loads for this controller is the place where you hook your 12V bulbs, TV, inverter...and not the place to hook the dump load.

You can buy a C35 for $90, or, you can buy Ghurd's kit for less than $20, maybe even shipping included. I got Ghurd's kit and I was amazed how well it works.
