Well after building the Dynohub and well this other more powerful novotech dynamo I`m feleing that its time for me to get some decent power like superwindys Turbine....

I`m using the smaller turbines to monitor my yield of wind over the winter months and to be honest it`s worth me investing in a larger turbine.

The treadmill motors will probably be the biggest ones I can get away with at homew, but that`s not going to stop me having an appempt at making the Hugh Piggot design too at some point.....

Anyway!!
Here is my question....

I`m going to make a voltmeter and ammeter into a box so I can see the needles move as the turbine does its stuff.

I`m thinking along the lines of non digital meters as this digital meter I have gives weird voltage readings .....

It`s nice to see the needle move when a surge of wind comes in......

Would a 0-50 Volt and a seperate 0-20 amp meter be to high?

What is the votlages and Current i`m likely to get from a bigger turbine? I basically just want to see the metes work while i`m in the hut checking the power and batteries....

Personally I dont like the digital stuff...

Hi Victor,

I agree, the digital stuff is ok for an accurate measurement at a point in time but for ongoing monitoring I like to see needles moving.

I havn't fully set up my own system as yet (in the final stages though) but I was thinking along the same lines on a voltmeter and an ammeter.

I did have it in mind as to whether i could have two volt meters; one to view the turbine output and a second to monitor the battery voltage but as soon as you connect the turbine with the battery (even if you measure the volts before the blocking diode) the volts stabilise irrespective of the turbine speed and output.

As to the meter ranges, if you want to have this as a fixed set up and don't want to measure open voltages (no batteries or load connected) then a 0 - 20 volt meter would be more than fine. I've got a 0 - 15V unit that I plan to use. As for an ammeter, it depends on your generator. If you're using an Ametek or a treadmill then 0 - 10 amp should be fine. I've got a couple of old car ammeters that have a 0 - 30 amp scales but most of the time I won't see them even flicker as their range is too high and the gauge is too physically small.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Del.
