Posted - 20/02/2008 : 09:32:05 I received an email from a guy named Robert who runs his house lighting with LED's. Currently it is all run from a single 75 watt solar panel.
Some interesting photos of his work here: http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/album/548140434BOGMxW

Posted - 24/02/2008 : 06:03:11 You must have mistaken me for someone who knows what a CTX 28, CIX 40 or KSU-less system actually is. No matter. Use the system efficiently and I am happy!
Many of the 9VAC systems feed a bridge and cap. Worth looking into. G- |

I agree with you. My plan is to use as many 12v dc items as possible to avoid the power loss of inverting. The TOA DT-930 AM/FM receiver is rated at 13.8v dc and the Mfg e-mailed me back saying the actual voltage operating range had a wide spread. The weather radio is a Realistic that had a internal (110v in/12v out) AC transformer that was connected to a bridge rectifier, I removed all that and connected a 12v dc - AC adapter to it to see how it would work as a test: has been running for months. The door bell can either be a 12v dc buzzer or a sound generator connected to the paging system. The phone system can be a Toshiba CTX 28,CIX 40 or a KSU-less system such as the TMC Epic ET-4000 4-Line Phones all of which are 12 volt dc powered. |

When you said I was loosing a lot of available power, was that in reference to the 7.5aH battery and it's limitted storage? I posted in later pictures it was upgraded to a 17.2aH battery. My plans are to eventually go to a 100aH battery as the TOA receiver, weather radio, door bell and possibly the answering machine and phone system will be added to the load. |

Posted - 20/02/2008 : 20:05:59 Hi Keith. I presume you mean LED's, not LCD's. LED technology is rapidly improving, I agree the older white LED's look very blue and 'cold' - The fixed focus of the LED is also a bit annoying.
However, as I said there are huge investments being made by the likes of Philips into the technology and warmer white LED's are becoming available.
I have a 12 volt 5 watt Luxeon LED and driver package here, equivelant to a 20w Halogen, and it has a nice warm colour, not cheap - 20 UK pounds ($40) and it will probably never need replacing...
The picture below is the Luxeon being directly powered from my 5w solar panel.

Posted - 20/02/2008 : 16:20:30 It's a neat system. The LED disconnect is pretty cool. But he sure is losing a lot of available power. A 75W PV with what looks like a 7AH battery? G- |
