Posted - 26/02/2008 : 17:02:26 Hi everybody, Well what a day, i was woken by the sound like a screaming banchee at 6.00 this morning, and it was my turbine, up and dressed and up on the roof tied to the mast and dismantled my turbine, digs around under the bench and finds my old beewind unit, so a quick clean and grease and up it goes, blades moved from my other turbine, dam time for a late breakfast ....lol. My pal arrives and tells me about his storm damage to his lambing shed, and how acres of trees are down in the forest, cuppa No2 and he says F*** dingle your thingy is on fire......well it was like the tail of a jet....smoke billowing out of the back of the unit. So quick dash into the shed uncouple the main feeds, by now i'm ready for a dram, so he helps me get it down in the now driving rain a gale, into the shed and strip her down ...............charred.

Just glad i keep plenty of spares, fit a new stator (ex blue wind usa) and get her back up spinning again, ammeter is now off the guage, look in shed for bigger one, uereka.....nearly 80A in the gale. Just another day in the life of a highland crofter.....lol.
regards Donnie.

I try to check my battery bank before i go to bed, if its windy and wild i just connect my dump load, just to be safe.

Just heard on the marine radio its gusting at close on 100mph in the Pentland Firth tonight, and thats only about 18 miles as the crow flies from me. I'm just sat at the table here dismantling my pmg, photo's later.

Posted - 26/02/2008 : 20:35:30 I can join the storm club now, after my mods at the weekend the benesh was spinning a treat, unfortunatley it had enough vibration in it to let the pmg shaft drop down through the mount (it wore the flat away on the mount so it could drop right through), pulling the top mount out of the blade bearing so that it was just supported by the pmg, at about 350rpm a 2m length of turbine didn't last long before it bent the shaft! Looks like blades and pmg have survived, back to the drawing board on the mounting system and shaft though! |

Posted - 26/02/2008 : 20:24:03 Your not having the best of luck Donnie. At least you are cranking some good amps now.
Good to hear of real wind experiences - probably scare the sh** out of me in your location.
