Just connecting my pmg up with gearing, if i leave it running but not connected to anything will it damage it?

A brushed DC generator should be OK.

A alternator can get some high voltages, maybe smoking the bridges.
Been there, done that. More often than I care to admit. ;-)

If this is on the VAWT and its been fine freespinning then it should be ok ..
The only problem there could be is the speed going very fast and causing excessive wear on parts.
