Posted - 16/02/2008 : 14:24:34 Hi everyone,,,,
Just like to say, that I finally got my Ametek from Canada.... (Speo).
And I can say that I'm very Happy with it. It's an Ametek 30V.
Recently as you may know I have being building a small power wind turbine from a dyno hub, must say that I have not yet managed to solve some difficulty, I guess it could be the walls around, blocking the wind (sound ironic)... here in London!.
On the other hand now that I have my Ametek I'm in the mood of building a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, similar the one that ben build for LED. it's less bulky, and basic!.
Can anyone give me some advice regarding Vertical Axis. The good side and bad side (using the Ametek 30V). I'm thinking to use again the 6inc. (brown terra cotta PVC) pipes, cut them all down in half and use 3 of them rather then 2. do you know what kind of measurements I need to build the vertical propellers?.
Kind regards
Oliver

Posted - 16/02/2008 : 15:49:33 Hi Oliver. You will never get enough revs from a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine to power the Ametek. Use it for a horizontal turbine, as I and many others have, it will start up a lot more easily than the dynohub, a good 4 foot prop will certainly get you enough speed for 6v battery charging if you are in a low wind area.
VAWTs seem like a good idea, safer, more simple but I have yet to see a really good one.
