I managed a few smaller dc motors this last weekend at an estate sale and have been thinking a downwind generator would be fun to try, unfortunately, I am unable to find much information if any on DIY downwind rotors and mount design.
Am I better just staying with simple upwind designs for dc motors?
The motor I would like to try to make a small downwind generator from is a 90vdc, 1750rpm, amp is unknown as that part of the label is missing (looks like a hard scratch against the label).

i'd just stick to what everybody else is useing, that way advice and the learning curve is far easier to come by, and besides an upwind is far easier to contruct, i think gurd put it in a nice easy way.

litespeed, it is labeled Hill House Products, I did a little net research today and found they offer a 90v 1725rpm, 1.46amp motor. I am guessing it is a generic labeled inhouse motor. Seems they can be bought on the net for $50 (U.S.) or so. 3 1/4" diameter by 7" long with a 5/8" keyed shaft (that will at least work very nice for an standard arbor).
ghurd, yes, I think a furling downwind is the problem, I had momentary toughts of a tension spring, but with that I pictured in my head a forward weight for balance, so with that, I am not sure I would acomplish much with a downwind versus an upwind, but fun to think for sure.

I see 2 problems with down wind.
It is hard to make a simple furling device.
It is hard to balance over the tower. Unless long shafts, or weights balance it. Or unless the blades are very close to the tower creating some greater wind shadow.
Sounds like 1 problem... It's harder for me.

Welcome to the forum... I'm not too sure about the efficiency of downwind systems compared to upwind systems. But, building a downwind system seems really simple in theory. I kind of wish I had gone that route now. Just water proof the motor, get (or build) a hub and arbor, strap the motor to the top of an old office chair swivel, mount the office chair swivel up on a pole and mount the blades so the motor is turning in the right direction.
That motor sounds pretty good. Who makes it? Check the resistance in the motor with a meter to see if it is a good candidate (I learned that here from Speo). The numbers look good. Looks like the cut in would be around 250 RPM. Maybe less. Hard to tell until you test it.
Keep in mind that water proofing some motors you may need to allow for some airflow in and out of the motor. Depending on the design.
