Ok here's the setup. Old washing machine drum pulley and bearing (drum removed) mounted on welded frame made of 2mm angle steel. 6 carbon blades with 5' diamater. Lucas LRD100 dynamo with 4-1 ratio of drive from V-belt attached to pulley on back of the turbine. Pivoted into the wind and dah dah dah. Nothing except a 1/2 turn in about 20 mph gusts.

Tried direct drive to dynamo and she flew round but just won't get the RPM needed to generate above more than a couple of volts. Many hours work and welding rods wasted but lessons learned. Need to find myself a DC motor.

Sorry to hear that II81.

Be sure it wasn't a wasted day, but a worthwhile learning experience as you say.

I have had many disappointments, they only make the achievements more worthwhile.

Probably the friction of the pulley belt and gearing killed it, DC motor, or if you electronically savvy try a axial flux alternator.

I do have 6 50-25-12.5 mm neodymium magnets and had come across this. http://otherpower.com/stator.html I have been toying with the idea of a 2 phase design. I used to work as a GRP laminator (fibre glass moulded products if your'e wondering what that is) and have a big vat of resin and alot of glass still. I was hoping to make it with a pre made genny. If I can't find one suitable I'll make one.

Sorry to hear about the sort of failed project, but at the end of the day we all learn more from it...... I reckon any failed project is a learning process so don`t feel that you have wasted your time.....

In this game every project is a learning experience and even the failed ones people can learn from.....

Every failed project is still a day playing in the workshop!

I have a dead washing machine in the bits box, so I'd be grateful for any updates you have.

Good luck, and rememebr the old saying "a man who never made a mistake, never made anything".

It's decided I am going to make a 2 phase alternator. I will update you after a couple of scribbles and several cups of tea.

Excellent (in a Mr Burns accent).

The fieldlines forum might be of great help, you can search the board and even google search the board for answers.

Good luck.

Ok, finally got 6 magnets mounted on my disk (trapped fingers, yeah!!) and ready for resining (is that a word) in place. See if I can't get the coils wound at the weekend. I also brought a wind turbine from Navitron LTD so when it turns up I will see how it performs. Oh so busy. If I find me battery charger I'll put some pics up.

Ok so after much swearing and trapped fingers I just can't get the results I want from trying my own design (rough prototype). I have found a bounty of treadmill motors in the states for $80 to uk. Rated 5 amp no load (loaded will be more) and should produce 12v at around 300 RPM. Lets see when it turns up.

Hi II81,
For your treadmill motors, contact local fitness clubs and find out who in the area repairs them. They most likely have some "odd duck" salvaged treadmill motors laying around for a reasonable price.

Baldor (the motor manufacturer) isn't allowed to sell the specific motor I got to anyone but Trotter (treadmill manufacturer). It doesn't fit any other brand of treadmill either. Spinning it by hand produces 15 volts with no load and it is rated at 90 volts @ 2400 rpm. I'll be gearing it up as it will take about 320 rpm for 12 volts.

Good luck!

For £37 to my door for a new motor it just doesn't seem beatable. Saves me a morning of looking. Good idea though.
