Put this together with old bits I had lying around; 5w resin solar panel 7ah sla maplin charge controller (case was taken off it(wanted to see what it was..)) ccfl from a scanner The ccfl is the tubular light that sits on the carriage of the scanner, I was lucky and it only had two leads, hook up to 12v power, but others may need a bit of messing around. Nice bright light and takes 300ma, tube barely gets warm in operation.

Nice use of 'lying around bits' Fungus - they're always worth keeping... You could also substitute the scanner lamp for a purchased 12v cfl car inspection lamp - 8w - 660Ma (£10) Or even the 12v cold cathode tubes that a stocked in most car accessories shops for 'boy racers' and the like..
Definitions of the above post by fungus - Sorry, if most are familiar with the terms.
sla - sealed lead acid battery Cfl - compact fluorescent lamp
ccfl is a mystery to me - maybe a typo?

Yes, sorry for using the acronyms, just used to using them :) Never said cfl... ccfl not a typo-as you already said its a cold cathode fluorescent light-more efficient and running cooler. |

Neon instead of mercury gas. Name crossed over from neon cold cathode valves that replaced thermionic valves in calculation devices that required only a high or low state (on or off no inbetween) output from the valve.

And you find these in old scanners? As in dead computer scanners?
Things that make me go HMMMmmm.
I put my trailer (caravan) wind catcher together today with exception of the mount and ball bearings. (machine shop time)
All the same it is easier to save power than produce it. I'm running some 12 volt fluorescent lights and getting into some LED's but this ccfl business is interesting. Do say more!
Cheers! BW

| Yep, its the bulb used to light up the surface while its being scanned, crack the case open and get the carriage off somehow, there'll be a small circuit board which has two or three wires, apply power to the wires... Some scanners have separate red/green/blue tubes, harder to power these.. |
