Hi everyone!

I managed to get a hold of 2 fans from an old industrial cooler from a cooling room.

The fan blade has a 54 cm diameter, and looks like it will easily catch the wind, making it an easy-starter in low winds.

The motor is a 220 / 380 v AC (depending if it is star or triangle coupled).
Nameplate RPM: 1390

Would I be able to use this hugely oversized motor with the currently attached fan, or would any load on the leeds simply cause the motor to stop?

I have still to build my first wind generator, so i'm a bit exited about this find.

Fan 1:

Fan 2 (i have included a pen in the picture to give an idea of the actual size):

The motor will be a squirell cage induction motor and of no use as a generator. The blades might work though as they have a good angle on them.

woo-hoo

Yes, the motor is an induction motor, adding magnets onto the rotor will make it into a good generator but it is quite a lot of work. The blades would be good for a small generator, but look like there is no airfoil.

Hi guys,

could you explain what an induction motor is and why without modification it would no make a good generator. I've played wit a couple of stepper motors and got ok results but must admit don't really understand AC motors.

Thanks

Del.
