Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone has opened the ametek motor before, my one is making somme strange noise inside, and I would like to have a look to see what is wrong or is this normal, it just feels like its rubbing or something, the output still seems to be o.k, need wind though to test it fully, and now there's no wind has anyone attempted this before. cheers for your help super windy

| hi windy take the circlip of from the top around the shaft and then undo the nuts holding the top casing on then slide this off from the shaft and then pull the shaft / armature out.sounds like you might have a magnet off i bought 5 of thease moters last year and the magnets fell off at least 3 of them . you can glue them on with araldite but make sure you get the poles the right way round all the best regards JONNY |

Hey Windy, I think Del, had one apart and offered instruction on getting it back together. It's hard to remember who it was, as there are so many helpful souls on here.
Cheers! BW

Windy. If it is just a 'brushing' type of noise, mine does that aswell - it is the brushes touching the commutater. Any other noise would need investigation e.g magnets becoming unattached.
The carbon brushes are sprung, so might need some care on reassembly - it can be done though.

Hi super windy,
Yes it's easy mate. I opened mine up out of curiosity. Very straightforward to get apart - you just unscrew the two 10mm nuts and gently pull the unit apart. It's fairly basic but a pig to put back together. I tried for 5 /10 mins very unsuccessfully to slide everything back together but just couldn't hold the brushes back. After a bit of lateral thinking I got a small piece of flat board, probabaly less than a foot square and placed the bottom of the Ametek on the board. You can see there are two kind of notches around the base of the unit and I then tapped in two two 20mm panel pins into those notches and into the board to hold the unit in a fixed position. I then tapped in two further panel pins about 30mm further out from the first two but in a kind of line from the middle.
I then cut two lengths of cotton about 150mm and folded them in half. Then holding the two ends of each piece of cotton you can hook them over the brushes and retract them to hold them in place as you re-assebled the unit. You use the second pair of pins to wrap the cortton round so they are being held in their retracted position hands free. Brushes being held in place I slid the motor components back together and before they were shut tight I released each length of cotton and just pulled each one out. Then screw the motor back together and hey presto all done.
Any problems let me know and I would take mine apart again and take some photos.
Best of luck mate.
Cheers

| del if you do it my way you can put the shaft / comutator into the bottom casting before you put the green outer casing on thus being able to get to the brushes , try it next time your agree it a lot easier regards JONNY |

Araldite rapid is good - it's not the same as superglue - it is an epoxy resin that needs mixing in equal quantities and cures due to a chemical reaction. The rapid stuff works in about 10 mins and is available at all diy stores - keep it all clean before assembly.
