i have a rutland hs503 charge controller which says for a single battery would it damage the controller if hooked up to 3 x 105 ah batterys. i would have thought it would just take a while longer to bring them upto fully charged

G'day keithw2112,
Like you, I don't see where it would cause a problem.
What was the context of this instruction/information??
In some marine situations for example there are two battery banks, a primary and a secondary. Some controllers(as opposer to regulators) may charge the primary as a priority then switch to the secondary when the primary is full.
Could they be indicating it is not one of those controllers and is for a single battery bank only?

Cheers... Gill

hi gill thanks for replying
instructions do say for a single battery bank but it is a pwm controller so i just presumed it would keep pumping max voltage into the bank till it reaches its slowdown rate
just seems strange to me how it can only charge one battery.
seems to have charged 1 x 105ah battery ok
so what if it had been say 3 x 37ah batterys
i think maybe a bit of playing around with the multimeter will confirm

keith,

I am not sure I'm right, but here is how I see it:

You are saying "instructions do say for a single battery bank"

To my understanding, a "sigle battery bank" could be 1, or 2, or 3, or 4, or ...X... batteries connected series or parallel, forming one bank. These batteries form one bank and you controller can handle it, because it can handle "a single battery bank", as you said.

So, the whole thing is: it can handle a single bank, not a single battery.

There are controllers that can handle two banks of batteries, each bank consisting of 1 or more batteries: http://www.e-marine-inc.com/products/charge_controllers/SunSaver%20Duo%20Solar%20Charge%20Controller.htm
