Hi - great website.
Bought the plans, want to get started - excited.

A couple of questions.
1. I need to find a 5/8" arbour for the motor, to connect the blades. any suggestions?

2. I have read that you can make propeller blades from pvc tubing, would this be better than your alluminium design?

3. Can I just connect the DC motors output straight to my 12v battery?, I want to power my electric fence in a large field.

Thanks
Kurt

Thanks Kurt for your post.

By far the cheapest method is to turn one on a lathe yourself, If not possible, look for motor arbours for polishing mops, or eBay U.S member 'roul' makes stainless steel ones for about $9- great quality, like mine.

2. I have read that you can make propeller blades from pvc tubing, would this be better than your alluminium design?
Might be ok for testing, but concerns about pvc becoming brittle over time and shattering don't inspire me with confidence - wood is the best material, but tricky to do properly

3. Can I just connect the DC motors output straight to my 12v battery?, I want to power my electric fence in a large field.
No - If you did, the battery would turn the motor in reverse - You need at least a 10 amp blocking diode - larger values don't effect performance, the inclusion of a 10 Amp fuse, as close to the battery connection is also advised.

Thanks
Ben

Hi, I have built a 100w generator according to the plans. I have a 38vdc ametek motor, I am only achieving >12v in strong gusts. Should I use longer blades with this motor as I see the plans are for a 30v unit? I have made the aluminium blades. Any other suggestions? Thanks...

Hello Waterboy.
I cannot find any data on your Ametek 38v motor, however I have seen from the link below that the 37 and 40 volt models require a lot more rpm's to reach cut in speed, maybe 1000rpm. My 30v cuts in at 550 rpm.

Longer blades would actually slow the rpm, but would have a better start torque.
Try and get hold of a 30v Ametek on eBay,include America in your search and sell yours on is my advice.
