Just worked out the best source for a pulley to use on my VAWT will be from a washing machine, anyone getting rid of one for christmas that could remove the pulleys for me?
Just thought I would ask, our tip are very cagey about you touching the stuff and buying a scrapper seems like overkill!

Regards
Chris

Chris,

I thought this a few months ago and got an old scrap washing maching from freecycle.

My VAWT never quite got finished and I need the time for other things now so you're welcome to the main pully, the one off the motor and the belt.

I actually drilled out the motor pulley slightly although the hole is not 100% vertical although it's 99% so should be ok unless you have a vertical drill that could drill it out a bit wider and straighter.

I'm going to be away for a few days from tomorrow so will have to weigh it up and let you know the postage costs - unless you're in Yorkshire at any time in the near future?

Is there anything else you want from the machine?

Cheers

Del.

Agreed, I can't help with your pulley problem Chris.
The UK's ridiculous health and safety rules disallow the removal of items from skips (dumpsters in the U.S)

There are a huge amount of useful items that can can be reused/recycled...
I am not sure how this can be resolved, I think an offer of a coupe of quid works - this shouldn't be the way....
Letter to local MP maybe?

Ben.

I agree Ben, It's just plain daft. We get council waste lorries round here with REUSE, REPAIR, RECYCLE on the side but we can't use the stuff they have to reuse repair or recycle!

I wonder if there is some kind of licence that's available to enable certain individuals to remove items from council tips.

Has anybody looked into this?

Cheers

Del.

Thats all good but say they allow people to rummage and take what they want;
Someone looking through might knock something over and damage their leg for example, they'll sue and splash it all over the newspapers giving it a bad name and tightening the regulations more. 'Health and safety'
With all that said, there is one of the local dumps that does nothing to stop people looking through and theres often a few people there looking for stuff.. another one is totally restricted with people watching all the time.

Del, I will take you up on the offer when you are back, i will still need the large drum pulley though if anyone has one (will probably have to stick a couple of drive belts together to get the right size., I was going to run the belt on the vawt top disc but have decided against it, i need the large pulley to bolt down onto the vawt axle and the small one to go on the generator.

So anyone else scrapping a wahing machine?

Regards and Happy Christmas
Chris

It`s been a situation over the years of identity theft..

If you rumage around a skip (Dumper) in my area usually someone phones the police... most of the junkies from Paisley sift through the rubbish during the night with a torch and steal peoples identity...

Over the years from 1995 the council has got rid of many rubbish areas in my area and made one big one!! The skip containers are massive!!

I`m afraid the put your hand in the pocket and offer a few notes usually let`s them turn a blind eye!!!

As soon as rubbish hits the skip it becomes council property! If the police find a junkie in a skip they get done for stealing!! this was done to stop identity theft....

Hope this helps clear the matter up on Scottish skips full of nice things we COULD have used LOL

just wrote this in a hurry hope it makes sense!! bedtime!!
