Last year one of my battery drills gave up the ghost so I chucked it. I have just discovered the charger in the cupboard with the others. If I open it up will I find a transformer 240/12 volt and, more importantly a rectifier. If so what will they look like?
I'll keep it intact for the moment. What a great explanatory site. Just the job to start my electronics education. I'll be talking amps and watts in no time!! Regards
MAYBE... It will be a transformer (UK-220VAC to battery Volts + about 20%), fed to a very small bridge rectifier, then possibly a cap, then to a large watt resistor to limit the amps (so the transformer and battery don't fry), then to the battery.
Better chargers have a few more parts.
Much better (or at least newer) chargers have a LOT more parts. Most are so tiny they can't be re-used by us.
The bridge rectifier is probably too low in amps and volts to be of use for most items (windmills).
