Found this video on youtube http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=yqh6st9cyIg
I contacted the U.S guy who made it, hopefully he can contribute on this forum, I have invited him. Hi Ben,
The design is based on information I found on the web about research done by Sandia National Laboratory back in the 1970s. Unfortunately I lost the link and can't seem to find it again. The alternator is actually a treadmill motor from Surplus City ($9.99). I don't remember the exact specs, but I think it was rated for 120 vdc at 5,000 rpm.
I don't have much in the way of instruments to analyze the performance of the wind turbine. An analog voltmeter connected to the leads of the motor gave an output of about 6 to 7 vdc during what were reportedly 15 to 20 mph winds. The turbine blades seem to be too small for the motor - it takes about a 10 mph wind just to start turning with no load. I really like your website. It looks like you have done quite a bit of experimenting. I'm going to try and find a bicycle generator as shown on your site - it should be more compatible with my blades.
Eric.
