Got these made up, they are ghurd's controllers who I've bought them from but they come completely assembled and in a nice case. The connections come out with a terminal block which connects to sense, power and shunt terminals, its preset at 14.1v. There is also optional extras of cabling and a shunt load made out of wirewound resistors.

Regulator: £15
Cabling : £5
Load : £10
I've set up a paypal shopping cart on my website, this will also accept credit cards/bank account. I have one regulator assembled now which I can send out but it would take a day or two otherwise to get it assembled and together.

hi fungus, basically, thats all i need is a controller that i can use on my ametek 38v, i want it to monitor the battery state and then switch to a dump load when it has to (i was thinking of getting a imersion element for heating water)

when the dump load is activated then what is the voltage that its producing to the dump load?

does the dump load only activate when the voltage going in to the battery is more than 14.1 volts?

this is a very 'grey'; area for me (im probably not the only one mind!!)

as i stated in the week, i saw 39v coming out of my ametek38v, so would this controller be able to handle this? what amps will it cope with?

Basically the battery will regulate itsself until its full, thats when you have to divert the power to the load. It will only activate at 14.10v, then turns off again at around 14.05v, so it keeps the voltage steady around there, it turns off/on pretty fast to keep it there. With the 39v coming out of the ametek when it is connected to a battery it does clamp it down to the battery voltage, the controller is just to stop it overcharging once full. You need a load that takes about 20% more power than the ametek puts in, this would be around 1.6 ohms and capable of dissipating more than 100w. A standard immersion heating element for running on 230v wouldnt be the right size for it but there is 12v elements available on the internet.

you've lost me!!!! so say the battery is flat - theres 4 volts in there, its a really windy day and my ametek is pushing out 35v, does th controller let all of this power into the battery or does the controller put it straight into the dump load? what dump load would you recomend? also , i am thinking of making another wind turbine, can i put both turbines onto one battery bank and then connect your controller to the battery bank? whats the max amps and volts your controller can deal with??

we'll get there in the end!! im sure!!

Right, basically the controller does nothing at all to the battery until its totally full at 14.1v which is when it sends power to the load to stop the battery being overcharged. I've also got the heating dump loads which I sell - if you look on the website theres one there assembled. The controller would only really deal with one ametek unless I put on a bigger heatsink for it or put in another transistor which can be done.

ok! getting there now! how much can you supply one controller that will support two ameteks for? i will supply my own immersion water heater for it, what wattage immersion heater will i require? 200w?

jonny - got the hubs today and they're very nice - thanks :) - will get them drilled out tomorrow. For higher amperages it will need a larger heatsink coming out of the box, I'd have to see what I have that would fit ok, maybe ghurd could help too as it is just his controller in a case and all assembled?
I dont think it would be good for as high an amperage as 40A - are you sure the 4' piggott turbine does 500w? If so then you could get a Xantrex C40 which could be good.

Agrifabs - if you go onto the link I gave ( http://www.reenergy.co.uk/regulator ) there's the shopping cart there - buy what you want and I can put on a larger heatsink for it for no extra cost.

i have just purchased this from you, is it only the heatsink that dictates how much it will handle then? would a 200w imersion heater be ok?

thanks for all your help, ive been waiting for a charge controller for a while now, soon i'll be storing power! cant wait! just another question , ive been wondering - i read a post yesterday and ben asked 'why wasn't you in school' how old are you? you must be an electronics genius!

agrifabs - the heatsink and the transistors limit what power it can handle, I've upgraded both of them. I'll send it out tomorrow.

The circuit has no real limit.
Extra power fets, heat sinks, loads, etc. will need to be added to handle the extra power to the dump load.

However, there comes a time when the windmill should have a better controller.
Maybe something with temperature compensation or automatic equalization. I won't say when that should happen, but 40A of 12V on a regular basis is getting close.

There are some windmills over 750W using this circuit, but it does take more parts (bits?), meaning more money.

ghurd, if the second power fet needs to be added, can it share the same heatsink with the first power fet, or does it need a separate heatsink? I think I was reading a post on fieldlines that was mentioning fets should not share the same heatsink.
