Hi Keith,
I'm inclined to think that the ammeter in question is intended to measure flow either into or out of your battery bank. The actual voltage of your bank would be a better indication of the total charge in them. If you do a search on battery voltage or battery charge on this site I'm sure the specifics have been covered.
As well there are a couple of statements in the ad that would make me steer clear of that vendor ... 1)"All my items are cleaned and inspected before listing, to ensure I list them as accurately as possible, but are sold as collectors items." "Inspected" could mean, the glass ain't broke, it's good to go! "Collectors item" does not mean a working piece.
2)"Many work perfectly, but I cannot guarantee them. See my 'about me' for more details." "Many work perfectly"? Not ALL but Many? I didn't see the word 'Tested' in the ad anywhere. That by itself would make me nervous.
I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but don't think you wish to add to your scrap bin either.
FWIW, BW

thanks for the advice bw i have a voltmeter set up allready i just thought this might be a cheap route to be able to tell me how many amps available (not that bright at all on the electronics side) as for the xantrex ..nice peice of kit but a bit out of my price range. my batterys are the hawker gel batterys so i dont think the densimeter would be any good there was a smaller one that moved between 3o amp charge and 30 discharge could this be connected to my system somehow to tell me how much amps coming in and how much amps going out i would have thought connected between the controller and battery would tell me incoming amps but could it be connected in a way to read amps outgoing |

You'll be fine with the voltmeter. Not as accurate as the battery monitor, but, at a fraction of the price.
If your ammeter can measure both ways, you can wire it like this:
Just keep in mind that if your sistem is based on solar, the controller will be wired differently than the wind generator systems. For solar, the panel is hooked to the charge controller and the charge controller is hooked to point 1 and point 2. For a wind generator, the generator is hooked directly to point 1 and point 2 and the shunt regulator will be also hooked directly to point 1, point 2.

Hi Keith,
I stumbled on to a good little read that I thought would help you better understand what you are trying to achieve. Have a look... http://otherpower.com/otherpower_battery_metering.html
