I made a downwind yaw at the weekend

Output peeked at just over 800w last night. Need to get a bigger dump load only have 700w.
Need to get it higher i want to hit the magical 1kw

Hi all,

I'm still looking round for some suitable scrap to make my chassis. I have the design in mind but just need a free or cheap outlet for the steel. Blades are sorted.

The design will be based on the Hugh Piggott furling design and should be something like the pics below.

Hi Brian,

How does your downwind furl design work? Is it adjustable to furl at different windspeeds?

Cheers

Del.

Hi Del

There is no furling on this one. I just knocked it up while waiting for some materials. Had a look at miniwind website who make downwind turbines and they suggest that all miniwind turbines are automatically or manually disabled in winds consistently above 15m/s

Hmmm, I'd like to know how they furl. I'll email them tomorrow if I get chance.

Their youtube video is worth seeing just for the tower set-up. I like!

I've got mine up too, not painted anything yet but will do sometime :)

You can see the balancing bar on the front here, I thought the imbalance would be larger than it is but it wasnt so thats why its near-central.

These pictures show the wires shorted but I've got it all connected now.

Hi Chris,

What kind of rpm are you getting on your VAWT without the friction of the gearing?

Cheers

Del.

Del, will try and rig up an rpm counter at the weekend, to hard to tell, turning very fast and bearings seem to be freeing up, it is hinged down at the moment until I finish the welds properly, 40mph gusts here at the moment!

All looking great guys - nice to see where everyone is at.
Getting good wind here tonight 25 mph, the little axial flux is charging a good 2 amps into my 12v sla (sealed lead acid) battery.

The air core design, such as this one really makes a difference in low wind speeds - no cogging, it never stops spinning.
An old photo below, it is actually mounted at 12 ft at the moment.

Not a huge a mount of power, however I have plans to get a 1.5 Kw renewable energy system up and running this year, (wind and solar power).

My best performing Turbine for 2007 was edh-1 using 6 blades. However I have a dynohub up at the moment with 4 shorter blades as my winter turbine as it can handle wind speeds of 40mph.
Hope to have a hybrid system and a few ameteks up and running in spring.

However the more specific magnet motors folks are using I`d like to know what sort of voltage and current they are getting from them? I know it will be far in excess of my micro turbine, but maybe the future energy alternators are the way ahead?????

chris_psmith.
In regard to your VAWT's rigidity, you could also guy wire from the top of the turbine, 3 off.
From the image above, it looks like a bungalow - I maybe wrong?

Maybe one from the roof's chimney if it is stable?, it could be fixed i.e a piece of wood or steel bar, and two wire guys from the ground.

Just a thought - If the wife agrees of course...

Ben.

Well i decided to take my turbine down seeing that there is some higher winds forecast later on.

919.4w 31.65a peek, defiantly need a turbine that furls in these kind of winds.

Ben, It is my home built garage extension, 3 guy wires fitted that seem to stop a lot of the movement, but lots of twist, just put a brace bar on the bottom against the garage wall, seems better.

Del, fitted a cycle computer, if my maths is correct, i put in a circumference of 167cm wich i think means 10rpm for every 1km/h. If thats right then I am doing about 300rpm at the moment, the wind has just picked up, so make or brake on my welding this evening!

Chris
