as promised just a few photos of progress.

well i used what materials i had laying about, i discovered a hinge off a 5 barred gate, opened up a bit was a good tight fit on the alternator shaft, i just drilled the hinge assy and put 3 x 3/8" bolts to pinch it up around the shaft, then welded it along side a mounting i made from angle iron. made a furling tail assy, and the blades......well i had an eight bladed hub led in the shed, so i bolted the blades from my bee wind pmg onto it, these are the blades i had cut down by 8" to reduce the noise from them, So up on the roof she went and wowwww, just a wee breeze and she was away, great eh!!. that night we had gales forecast so i kept going out to check on it, but the rpm never increased, and boy did we have gales, 75mph recorded at wick airport that night, but my genny never increased in speed, a check on output showed i was getting a steady 14A, and this was keeping my batteries at a steady 14.3V, but no matter how hard the wind gusted the turbine never increased its rpm. just a low and steady whine, dam its so quiet. question is ... do i increase the blade area at the tip by laying a metal blade over the top of it of a larger width (the blades i'm using are those high speed blades, with the thin tips) and say just fit these wider blades to 4 of the blades? and as for the furling its not needed, in fact it never worked in the gales ..lol. all ideas and comments appreciatted guys.
best regards donnie.
just keep her spinning..

Hi Donnie,

You might want to edit your post so the pictures are on top of each other and not alongside each other.

I think the reason you maxed out your rpm even in the severe gales you had may just be down to the blades you're using. They're the Air-X type aren't they? Super fast but you don't need super fast with the futurenergy PMG, you need torque. The Futurenergy data they have on their site is that for the 24v unit (I think that's what you have isn't it) 490rpm will give 34 amps with a battery voltage of 33.6 (seems very high for a 24v bank set-up) so 1142 watts. So mega spped you don't need but you do need blades that will be meaty enough to turn the unit at 30+ amps which must be a heck of a turning resistance and is probably why Futurenergy use their chunky multi blade set-up. In short, I reckon you need more torque mate so either modify what you have or come up with something else.

Keep us all posted mate

Cheers

Del.

Are these gen's available in the U.S.? That looks alot like TLG's. I have not seen "just the generator" (that generator) available anywhere over here.

These things look great! Much better than my feeble project.
