Hello! I have been reading through the archives here for a few days now. Lots of great info., I must say.
After reading this thread:

I have decided that I want to take apart one of my 50's to check/grease the bearings and check the magnets to be sure they are secure. Johnny mentions a circlip around the top of the unit? I am not seeing that. I'm assuming that I will need to find this to put it back together the easy way? Those spring loaded brushes sound like a bugger to get back in.

(this is my experience with the ametek 38, I think the others have the same frame construction but longer),
There is two bolts/nuts in a recess on the front of the motor, you will need a socket/driver to get them out, a spanner wont fit. Then it all just pulls apart basically , theres the two end plates and the casing with the magnets glued to it.
On the front where the shaft connects to the main bearing there is a circlip on each side, take the front one off as it allows for easier assembly later.
To put it back together, put the rotor/armature into the back bearing first, pulling back the brushes to fit around the commutator, this is probably the easiest way to do it. Then put the casing around it making sure the bolt holes are lined up, then put the front casing on, bolt it down and put the circlip back on the front shaft.

Hi AJ,
I had an Ametek 30 and managed to dismantle it and re-assemble it without removing the circlip but did have fun with the sprung brushes and needed to make up a simple jig to get it back together. I did write a post on how it was done a few months ago until someone told me about the circlip. Doh!

Thanks guys! I didn't think it would be that difficult.
After looking at the above picture I have found another problem though. It looks like these long body 50's have a 1/2" shaft. It appears to be 5/8" where it passes through the bearing and then milled down to 1/2" where is comes out of the bearing. There also seems to be a little different cover and no circlip? I'll just rip one apart tomorrow and have a look.
I should have measured the thing to begin with. I just assumed they were all the same. Stupid me... I need to change my arbor order.
Weird...

I took this thing apart today. It was really easy. Nothing to it. The hardest part was finding a socket thin enough to get the 2 top nuts out.
I took it apart, cleaned and lubed the bearings and coated any surfaces that could rust with a corrosion proof compound. All the magnets seemed to be on there pretty good. Nothing loose.
Before the action was a little stiff and noisy. Now it is smooth and silent.
Worth doing. Here are pics of the pieces for anyone using these willing to do some maintenance.
