This may be a naive question. But why do the instructions to build a brake hub type PMG always say to encapsulate the windings. I can understand the magnets since they need to be firmly held to stop them flying off, but the windings are fixed. I would have thought that they should have a minimum of covering to help with cooling? I would expect some force on them due to the interaction with the magnetic fields but do they really need this level of securing, normal motors and generators are not encapsulated though granted use a different physical configuration. Also would iron in the centre of the windings improve or decrease the efficiency of this type of alternator.
