i built a homemade wind generator w/ a 30v amatek motor and wanted to get a solar panel as well. can i run the 2 power sources into a charger controller together?? sorry if stupid ?. also, is there a way to just connect the 2 into an inverter to run smaller appliances (phone charger, etc.) for AC or do you need a steady stream (constant) of power from a battery. sometimes might not want to recharge a battery and just run direct to inverter and appliance. thanks

If the controller is designed to work only with solar systems (no dump load feature) than NO, you cannot connect both to that controller.

If you can configure the controller in dump mode (as a shunt regulator), than you can hook both wind and solar sources directly to the battery and also connect the shunt regulator directly to the battery. Both wind and solar will put out all their power into the battery and the shunt regulator (controller) will drain the unwanted, excess power.

For example let's say at some point the battery must be charged only with 3 Amps, but the wind gen is producing 5 amps and the solar 7 amps and they are connected directly to the battery. There is an excess of 9 Amps. The shunt regulator will drain the excess of 9 Amps by connecting the dump load.

You can use an expensive shunt regulator as Xantrex C series or Morningstar Tristar, or you can get a realy cheap kit from ghurd (a member of this forum) and assemble it by yourself, or, get the already assembled kit from fungus, another member of this forum.

There is no way you can connect the two power sources directly to an inverter, you need a battery.
