Howdy!

I have a few questions I hope you can help me with:

I'm setting up an off-grid independent hybrid system in a rural area in Spain (230V/50Hz) and I have a 48V windmill but my inverter is for 24V and my batteries are wired for 24V also,

1) Can I use a controller for the windmill so that the charge going into the batteries will be 24V and NOT 48V?

2), What happens to the "remaining" incoming (from the wind generator) 24V?

3) Can that be diverted to another 24V controller and then to the batteries? (So that one wind generator will actually work as two?)

4) Or sent to another diverting load?

I can't take back the wind generator and I don't want to change my 24V setup. Obviously I want to use the 48V wind generator. How can I do this?

Thanks for your time and help.

Hoping to hear from you soon,

Pat

Hi Pat,

As far as I'm aware you can use your 48v rated turbine to charge a 24v battery bank but you'll be losing 50% of it's capability. For instance if it's rated at 25Amps: 25 x 24v = 600W but 25 x 48v = 1200W. However, the cut-in rpm will be half so it will cut-in and produce a charging current into you bank at a nice low rpm.

Cheers

Del.

Probably also stalling the wind gen and preventing it from producing any more ..

Good point Fungus, I hadn't thought of that. What's your 48v cut-in rpm Pat.
