Just thought some of you might be interested in this .. Since it was replaced, I decided to take apart my ametek 38v and rewind it to make a direct drive vawt generator. I'm only expecting around 20w max from this but it should be interesting with an approx 2*3 ft blade set. I started out numbering both the commutator segments and the slots in the armature, and started unwinding them, making a chart of all the connections and slots that it needed. It originally had about 40 turns of #21 in each slot , I've increased that to around 140 turns of #28 in each slot, this should give a reasonable cutin speed. So far I have 16 out of 22 coils inserted and wired in, but I'll need to order some more wire as I didnt get enough for it. Some pictures .. Before:

Nice work Fungus, I'd rather you than me, winding coils, and counting them is so boring, I've just wound 300 turns myself for a mini alternator - more of that soon.
Your pics also illustrate nicely the skewed laminations of the stator, that reduces the cogging in the Ameteks to nearly nothing.
Your low speed VAWT intended conversion should be a good success.
