I ran across a rather interesting article on Group IV Semiconductor.
Electron to photon conversion is rather interesting from the video and some reading. Lets just say the future looks very bright.
WARNING the video is 53.6 MB for 6 minutes but well worth it on high speed connections for certain. Dial up would be a pain for the video but the site still has some great written information.
