hi fellow windies. just a thought here, a lot of topics on the forum lately regarding blade blade sizes, i'd just like to point out before you go fitting huge blades with exceptional power to size ratio. have a good look at your front bearing and think , "is it up to it" just for the sake of safety, the following photos are damaged bearings from my futurenergy, i'd hate to hang 3 mtr blades from those, and the hub size is a huge issue here too, hold your hand up in a gale, a lot of pressure on your hand, now think about the area of your hub and and blades, and imagine all that thrust on the bearings, just make sure you don't over load those bearings.

yep not very big at all.
regards donnie.

Eeek Not thrust bearings by the look of them, just ball races. What were they thinking of?
I suppose you could mount the blades on a trailer hub so that its thrust bearings take all the push, and chain-drive a Futurenergy alternator from that. Lossy and probably high maintenance/low MTBF though. |

Hi everyone,if you have an Ametec as i do the shaft is 3/8-16mm so the bearings are even smaller than the futurenergy one's,ive finaly got round to making the blades and fitting them to johnny's 5 blade hub i asked him for and what a differance a blade makes. For the first time since ive had the Ametec its finaly producing enough power to charge batteries,in the latest gales i saw 22v 25v 30v prediode under load in fact one night i was in my outhouse trying to run power off because my batteries where boiling[ only 4 old car batteries]and it seemed to hold on 14v to 15v for some time.Having said that i have noticed the bearing have got noise;y but unless i get some significant play on them theres not a lot i can do about it if i changed them every time they got noise'y it would be a weekly job.
