Hi little gotwinds: today I have managed to finally get all the cans inside the box, and during the day, while waiting for my mate to bring me all the cans, I decided to test the unit, wooooowwww, does it work or what , it was has most of you know very windy, and temperature outside was 15 to 17 degrees, well I clamped the glass to the front of the box, and after 8 minutes the temperature was so high comming out of the box that the thermometer went to its limit, anyway here's a video instead of me telling you the story: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBwBxmQ7UDs I definatelly, definatelly recommend everyone doing this project, has the temperature rise is phenomenal, so far it's only cost me £5 for the black matt barbeque paint, so gather all the materials and go for it, your boiler will love the break. cheerio super hot windy

Good update Windy. Your videos are great and appreciated by a lot of us. I am looking into similar projects at the moment, although not being in the building trade, most items will have to be bought, still may save money.
Did I hear you correctly in your video, you have your house thermostat set at 24 degrees C (75f)? - knock that down by 5 deg and wear a thicker jumper and you could save loads of cash.

Yeh,
I have a digital central heating thermostat and it never goes over 21 degrees. We set it to 19 for the mornings (seems warm enough) and then up to 20 early evening and then up to 21 late evening. No idea why it seems to feel different as the day goes on.
I also have thermostatic rad valves on my upstairs radiators which help too.
Cheers

super windy,
While the change in the window is a major increase relative to normal atmosphere, overall it is not such a big heat capturing device. When you figure the number of btu's for the small panel then you find it really isn't very substantial. The 6' x 12' pool in the other thread I was talking about could barely keep water above freezing unless it had other considerations like a wind block and the snow could not obscure the cover. Otherwise even something considerably larger like we had couldn't of heated a useful space during the winter time. The pet may like the warmth in something like a doghouse, although you could end up frying it when the cold weather subsides.
What you are measuring is a substantial concentration of heat, not necessary a substantial and 'continuous' source.

This is awesome windy! Thanks for posting this. We are talking about moving to Colorado towards the end of the year and I am already worried about the cold. Florida winters are very mild as the temps. rarely dip below 50F. As an example... Today the highs are forecast to be in the lower 80'sF and lows in the 60'sF.
I'm still a little new to all this renewable stuff. Very exciting... I ran across this after watching your link and doing some research. Lots of info. on this out there. Great stuff!

You are happy with that? Most heat energy is being reflected back out of the box.
Wait until you paint it black!
Really. I have heard of some poly-something-iso-or-other insulation melting.
Get a low pressure / high volume, 12V computer fan. That often means high volume with low milliamps, and bushings instead of bearings. The faster the air flow, and the lower the delta temp, and the higher the effiency.
If the mini solar panel is covered with glass, make it the thinest glass you can get. Low lead (Pb) content glass is best (and crazy expensive). I would simply seal the existing PV better than the factory did it.
Check the ma of the PV under a few different conditions, before and after the protective glass is added. I expect the protective glass screws up the output enough to not bother protecting the panel. Maybe it would be best to try to protect the panel while it has the high output, then if it fails buy a new panel. Might be cheaper than paying for the heat bill it saves.
Hold a piece of window glass above the panel to see how the amps into a 12V battery drops. (simple demonstration)
And do Not let a thin-film PV like that get hot. It will kill it. Protecting it from rain behind glass may be its early death from heat.
I 100% hate Utube, but it seems half the clips I watch until the end sound like you talking. And the shed deck looks the same. And the panels. And the batteries do too. G-

BTW, how did the 3 cedar blades and double-PVC blades work out? Sorry if I missed it. G- |

cheers guys for your comments, and advice, finally managed to paint the cans matt black, and finally fitted the window permenantly in the box, hopefully will do further testing and fitting it in its final place in the next 2 days or so, and I will as usual update you guys on the outcome, so far I'm very happy with it, but once installed we'll see, like I said total cost so far £5 for barbeque matt black spray paint can't go wrong, after testing it and if outcome is positive I will let you guys know, where you might source all the different materials for free hopefully. hi ghurd, thank you for your advice and wisdom I 100% hate Utube, but it seems half the clips I watch until the end sound like you talking. And the shed deck looks the same. And the panels. And the batteries do too. G-, p.s ghurd you forgot to include my two turbines, now I'm upset . cheerio super windy

Keep up the good work Super Windy, just be careful you don't get caught "finding" all these things on building sites! Hef |
