hello everyone, glad that i could join the wind power community. this is my first post so hopefully i will be able to pick everyones brains and get the help i need.
So my question is.....I am looking for a good motor to use in my first wind turbine, i hear alot of good things about ametek and was considering getting one off ebay. However i ran across some a website with hub motors and got to looking at specs and i thought that it might work just as well. and i wanted to know your opinion. the one i saw HBS-24,(Brushless),(Gearless) hub motor. specs were....250 (W),24 V, 10.8 A, 200 rpm.

Can you provide a link? That motor sounds deadly! If I had found that one I wouldn't have bought my hub motor. 110 rpm for 6 amps charging is PERFECT for my holiday trailer turbine. PLEASE, do tell more. My German is a bit lot rusty.
It sounds excellent for a VAWT, and a hatchet job HAWT blade set could make power with that hub.

I clicked on the Hub motor icon on the left hand side and its model number HBS-24.
Haven't figured out the price on that model though so i need to e-mail the distributor about that.

Great stuff wind novice! I found a distributer only about 450 miles away (as the crow flies). Mind you it is 685 miles by road. Oh yes and there are those three pesky mountain ranges to deal with as well. All the same I am touching base with the distributer and will keep folks informed.

Unfortunately the response was very thin on facts. I pointed out I was interested in the hub only, and asked what the cogging was like. I also asked if the magnets were set square or angled inside the hub. After what must have been 'a thorough investigation' I'm sure, [/sarc] their reply in full was...

The full wheels run $300 + $28 S&H (thats about 164 GBP)
I guess the E-bike business must be booming on the west coast.

| that is unfortunate to hear, the prices for the Dayton motors seems a little steep for me, i'm just a poor college student. i'm thinking about just going with a treadmill motor and maybe try and gear to make it work better. if i am able to do that i might be able to get a good performance out of the motor. treadmill motor will also be much cheaper and a good starter motor for me to begin my experimentation. |

I currently have 3 DC treadmill motors (all 2+ HP) kicking around that I bought for $20 and $25 each. My source is a shop in town that repairs treadmills. It took a few hours in the yellow pages to find them but they had about 25 or 30 motors on hand.
Take a calculator along with you to decipher the lowest RPM per volt (RPM/Voltage=RPM per volt) as this will be the best candidate for a gen unit.

You could stop at the local furnace & A/C dealers.
Ask about "variable speed blower motors with burned up brains", meaning a GE ECM.
Remove the brains from the rear, leaving a 3 phase PMA. Add diodes. 1/2HP makes 100W and fairly well suited to 12V using slower blades, 1HP makes 400W but should have the coils reconfigured for 12V.
Might get one for free.
