New Wind Turbine,

Hi Ben and all at Gotwind,

I have just completed my Sturmy Dyno wind turbine it must be one of the cheapest on here as all parts were sourced for free or made from what I had laying around.

It Has 4 blades cut by eye from a 4 inch sewer pipe and the tail is made from the number plate from a childs bike.

But as usual I have a question, I have it loaded with 6 small bulbs 5 12v 0.32w and 1 12v 5.0w. This load makes start up difficult but when it gets going I'm getting readings from 4v and up to 20v with the 12v 5w disconnected in gusts of wind.
If I connect up all the bits and bobs i.e. ac-dc rectifier and battery will it make it harder to start up.

I also found that whilst the tail makes it find the wind easier it still found the wind without it.

Sundowner.

I've posted this reply once but it seemingly disappeared. I'll delete this if the other turns up.

If you have bulbs on, then it is effectively shorted out untill it gets fast enough to break out of stall, and make enough power to get the filaments hot enough to show some resistance.

If you have it connected to a battery via a rectifier, you should find that it starts easier as it doesn't produce any current untill it's output is greater than the voltage of the battery.

Warning: this can be very annoying, I frequently see mine turning for no other effect than 'wearing out the bearings'. :-)

I had very good results with the dynohub last year and I have to say they are the best building block people can get!! After that folks sell them on and put the money towards another turbine.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I guess I'll just have to put a rectifier on it and connect it to a battery and see what happens. :)
