Hi Ben and all at gotwind,

Now that I have made the Sturmy dyno turbine I think I have learned a little and am now looking at motor conversions.

I have a motor that has 4 wires coming off the coils and a nice half inch shaft.
I'm thinking of getting the centre turned down on a lathe but before I do this I would love to see some pictures of what it should look like.

Has anyone on the forum actually done a motor conversion.

I have a motor that I think might be ideal for converting into a wind turbine generator but I have no idea how many magnets I should put into it.

A little advice in how to calculate number of magnets needed would be appreciated.

Advice always welcome

3 phase motors best, skewing the magnets advised to reduce cogging,

Over to Sir Fungus on this one..

Ben.

Pictures of the insides would be useful .. it sounds like a single phase motor but they can still make perfectly acceptable conversions. What speed/power/voltage is the motor? Hard to say much more without pictures.

Hi Ben and Fungus,

I'll put up a few pictures tomorrow and hopefully you'll be able to give me good news about the motor.

If the news is good I think I may have unearthed a cheap source (free) of these motors for all members.

I can't read all the details on the tag as it was just a sticker and it has faded a lot.

The only detail I can see is:

Motore Monofaze inphzione
1385 n' "Missing text" 200/220 W
220/240v 50Hz "misssing text"
Conde 8pF-V1 400V

Any ideas from this info ?

Is 1385 a common RPM over there?
If so then it needs 4 magnets. NSNS.

It won't make much power, hard to get 1A...
Unless you can see / find where the wire jumps from one coil to the next, and reach enough of it to add an extension to both sides. AND the wire is heavy enough to work with without breaking off. Doubt it.

Good news is it sounds easy to me, will work fine with small slow blades, cheap neos are fine (old HDD neos?),
and it is a ton of cheap fun.

Cheap fun sounds good to me, and if I can do this conversion easily enough it might inspire me to tackle one that will give me more power.

Insert standard "Grain of Salt" kind of disclaimer here.

Looks like 4 coils on the 'inside' and 4 on the 'outside'?

Looks like it needs 4 magnets, NSNS.

Looks like 0% chance of finding and working with the coil to coil jumpers.

Looks like red and a blue have some ohm reading,
and the white and 'other' blue have an ohm reading,
but blue to blue is open? Maybe red to white is open?

Looks like a UK twin to a few I did. Low amps, High volts, all scrap parts, and huge cheap fun.
I'm doing one "far worse" than that right now.

Make space for 4 magnets (neos). Keep it tight.
It might (will?) cog, so if the magnets are rectangular, skew them. It the magnets are round, offset them a couple degrees.

Add a 600V 5A bridge (1.5A might be plenty) to each pair of connected wires.
Let her fly!

Remember, that bugger can make some crazy high open voltages. It can hurt humans, or smoke other equipment.

I think this thing, where it is shown, did a half amp. Sometimes in BIG winds it got around 750ma at 12V. I believe it broke an amp when I did not see it working.
And I think the wires were smaller (worse) than yours.
Other than that, it looks like a twin.
Total cost, about £4 for new parts (motor, magnets, and bridges), and a fan from "the skip".
Not a typo, £4. I honestly think it was less.

It is not GOOD or Great or whatever, but it works.

Hi GHurd,

Thanks for information as posted above.

If I can find the wires and they are strong enough to solder a connection to what improvements would that give me.

The wires look thick enough to solder and there appears to be one set of wires with 2 blue 1 red and 1 white

the white wire comes from the top of the motor and it is connected to a coil with with a little silver coloured "thing"(excuse my ignorance),with 15 AM 9181A engraved on it.

I have no idea what it is.

I expect it will make a lot of volts. Lets say it makes 40V on one set of coils (pair of wires) at some speed.
And because it has 4 coils in that set, each coil makes 10V.
IF it is possible to find where coil #2 wire jumps to coil #3, then that set of coils can be split into 2 sets of coils, each making 20V (2 coils x 10V). The resistance goes down, and the amps go up. The voltage goes down, I think helping keep it out of stall.
The efficiency goes up.
It will not be easy to find with those tiny wires and tight coils. If it is found, there is a good chance it won't be long enogh to work with, but it is worth a look.

I can't see the silver thing, but I expect it is a thermal device that shuts the motor off if it gets too hot.
I would remove it. Remove being by-pass it. I'd probably leave it in there so the coil laces stay in tact.
Looks like the easy way to remove it is snip it off, then splice the 2 white wires together?
It has me a bit confused about the rest of the wiring. Something might be different than I said above.

Ghurd,

I think you neglected to tell everyone about the LED billboard on the tail vane ... brilliant!
