Hi guys just butchered an old washing machine, I have the belt wheel, the belt and probably more important the motor, now the questions, the motor is made by indesco and states: v220/240 HZ50 CIf washing A.4.0 w85 spin A2.0 w320 here's somme pics: http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z34/humberto900/15052008044.jpg http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z34/humberto900/15052008045.jpg http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z34/humberto900/15052008049.jpg the reason for this is I will when time allows buy another treadmill motor cheap and do a vawt has the belt wheel to the motor ratio is 1 full turn of the belt wheel is 12 turns on the motor shaft, now somme calculations if the vawt is sppining at 60 rpm the motor shaft can be spinning at 720 rpm or there abouts, has I remmembered the treadmill needed around 350 rpm to reach charging voltage, so in theory I could have a slow turning vawt giving me good amps, and once the belt goes, I just do another raid to the local shop for more belts, has anyone donne something like this, I am sure it has been attempted before I might even use the ametek 30v has a test motor. cheerio super windy

It would make a great story.
Gotwind turns 'white goods green' - ha ha I have given it much thought myself, if it were a Fisher & Paykel smart drive machine it would be worthwile.
Superwindy. I can't think of a quick way to modify the standard washing macine motor, and gearing a treadmill motor with a pulley belt would kill any vawt project in my opinion.
No easy answers - unfortunatly
Ben. |

cheers dell and gotwind dell I can't believe that you went that far and left it, all you needed was the blades, here's a video of another fella that had the same idea: http://www.youtube.com/v/zuqYVh9Qkb0&hl=en all he needs is the belt like yours and the little motor, and hopefully it would work. |

Good grief it's exactly like mine. I did have some PVC pipe at the time, I just made the decision that my time is precious and I had to devote it to other things. I'm also planning on emigrating later this year so am trying to get rid of all my stuff really. Looks like the one in the video was working well - I wonder if it was connected to a motor.
As the belt was grooved and went around a grooved small pulley I think the friction losses were less than a V belt design.
Go for it SW.
Cheers

Hi SW, another motor to use might be the one I'm going to use, In fact I've only just test flown it last week and it's looking good so far. It's a permag motor found on some of the older Whirlpool or Phillips washing machines. http://gotwind.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~476.asp (sorry, never did post a picture of it! Hef |

Woo Hoo, done it at last, pics of her flying next! Hef PS There was a polyvee pulley on the shaft originally, but I removed it. Super Windy, those polyvee belts usually last the lifetime of a machine when tensioned correctly, so you shouldn't need to replace too many. |
