hello, i just got my turbine up and running for the first time tonight and i was quite excited. in our area we were seeing 10 mph winds and 15-20 gusts. well on the ground i was seeing about 4-6 volts and on top of my friends roof i was seeing around 7 and a max of 9. (kinda scary when your on a roof with a hub that isn't bolted to the shaft ha ha, not smart on my part)

I figured that this was pretty good considering my hub design is sub par as was probably slipping on the shaft so i'm waiting to rig up a pulley and get that going soon. and my blades aren't exactly perfectly balanced yet.

quick question, it got me thinking of how much charge time would i actually be getting on a normal day considering i didnt see anything over 9 volts on my first run. Im just curious as to how long you will see enough volts to charge a battery in a normal day.

So i got it out again today because it is another perfect day for wind turbines around here, we have 15 mph winds and gusts up to 25. This time around I took my turbine on top of the hill at our local park.

I saw a max of 15 volts and was kinda disappointed because these are the typical winds we see around here and i only saw that 15 volts for a short period of time. Im not exactly sure of the problem but i figured its probably my blades.

I am using 1/4 thick 4" pvc at the moment because thats all i had access to at the time, so im going to make a run to the hardware and pick up a piece of 6" pvc and redesign my blades along with my hub and maybe cut it down from a 4 blade to a 3 blade design so i get a little more rpm's.

any thoughts about anything else i could try to get more rpm's?

3 blades faster - generally
shorten them slightly for higher rpm, lower start up performance is the downside.

Ben.

well at this point in time my blades are 24 inches, i dont know if i really want to be going any shorter than that, so i figured i would try out the 6" pvc and 3 blade design and stick with 24 inches long because it seemed to have a cut in speed at about 4-6 mph which i thought was pretty good.

Well, 24 inches long is still a 4' diameter. A lot of people around here run dc motors on 36" diameter blades.
