Hi all,

I ran across an article that covers adding new batteries to an old battery bank. I comes with a schematic that means near nothing to me but I thought I'd run it by some of the more electronically minded folks here. My simple question, is it real or just the source of pungent hot air? Perhaps it can help some of you out as well.

I didn't know of the problem untill I read it there. The guy looks like he knows what he's doing and certainly knows more electronics than me (which isn't difficult ).

This made me smile though......

"A high-power lamp is used because it is much cheaper than a high-power resistor and because it converts some of the energy to light instead of heat and you can watch it work"

I think the percentage heat on filament lamps is greater than 97%, but I agree it's a cheaper heater than a power resistor.

My own extra 400W of dump is 8 in number 50W downlighters hanging off a 1KW 24V inverter. I'm hoping that with less than half-load on it, the inverter won't pull too much instantaneous when the controller powers it up? Other option of course is to shove a few more cheap 3KW electric radiators in parallel, at 24V each one ought to eat 300W or so.

I'm a firm believer in using your waste energy in the most practical way possible, for yourself. If you need heat, power a heater of some sort. If you need light, power a light of some sort. Perhaps the gent in the article needed both??? We don't know what he was after??? All the same he got some light and some heat from his garbage (excess power). I won't fault him as I don't know his plans or budget.

Cheers,
